What’s the Strangest Online Purchase You’ve Made?

The other day I was bidding on Mach 3 Turbo razor blades on eBay and I stopped to think about how silly that actually sounded.  Here’s how it goes down at my house: Mr. Money tells me he needs new razor blades, and can I pick him some up while I’m grocery shopping?  I tell him that if he can wait, I can order them online and we can save a lot of money versus buying them at the store.  He then agrees and starts using my emergency stash of disposable Bic razors (not cool.)  I then forget because I’m busy, so a few weeks go by and he asks again, which prompts me to get looking on eBay.  I then find some Mach 3 Turbo razors that are a good deal, so I bid on them.  And then I lose.  And then I forget about it for a few days.

Then I remember, and bid on another item.  I think I’m going to lose the auction, so I start looking on Amazon at the prices of the razor blades. I find a good deal there, so I keep that in mind while I wait for the auction to end.  The next morning, I find out that I actually won the auction (yay!) so I pay via Paypal so that Mr. Money doesn’t have to wait any longer to receive his (now very necessary) razor blades. Done and done.

The more I got to thinking about it though, the sillier it sounded to me.  I mean, who buys razor blades on eBay? Granted, they are brand new and in the packaging, but still.  Most people just run up to the grocery store and purchase the razor blade refills.  Those things are expensive!  I can’t stand to pay full retail price knowing I can get a better deal online.  Of course, Mr. Money may not agree that it’s the best thing because he has to wait so long.

Another reason I purchase the razor blades online is because I can get them in bulk and it helps me from having to remember to buy them again in a month or so (obviously I’m not very good at remembering to order them!).  Not only does it save me money, but it also saves me time.

There are many times where we’ll be shopping and I’ll look at something and be like, oh I want that, but I won’t buy it because I know I can get it cheaper online!  I’ve done that with vitamins, shoes, coconut oil, and other random things that we’ve wanted.  It always seems like I pick the strangest things to order from the internet.  I can only imagine what the delivery person would think if they actually knew what was in our packages.  They would probably think we’re very weird!

Shopping online can be a great money and time saver if you actually go ahead and do it when you’re supposed to.  Sometimes you get in a time crunch and then can’t help but purchase the item from the store.  I do like supporting local businesses, so if the price is not that much different, I will pick it up from the locally owned store.

What’s the strangest online purchase you’ve ever made?

Has your husband considered trying a traditional safety razor?

My husband uses one like this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Model-178-Classic-Straight/dp/B000LY2AKI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1288014538&sr=8-3

The blades are just regular steel razor blades. They cost about 50 cents a blade, and they’re 100% recyclable steel.

    http://www.amazon.com/Pack-Merkur-Double-Razor-Blades/dp/B000NCMMBA/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1288014598&sr=1-2

My husband switched to a safety razor because we were so tired of spending a million dollars to buy replacement razors, plus the plastic/steel combo makes them nearly impossible to recycle. He should look into it! My husband loves his.

Karen- I’ve wanted him to try that for a long time! Maybe I’ll get one and he can give it a try. If he doesn’t like it, maybe my dad will. :) Thanks for the suggestion! I love that they are recyclable too.

    Is it hard to use?

I use drugstore.com to buy goodnights for my son, vitamins, even recycled toilet paper. I don’t have to make a trip to store. They have lots of natural and organic stuff, and when I get free shipping and use coupon codes I pay less than I woul din store (be wary some of there stuff is very expensive.)

I buy lots of stuff online so I can avoid a trip to the store.

I almost always get free shipping.

I think it also saves money when you don’t impulse buy as I do often in a regular store.

Certainly not a strange purchase, but an economical one that makes sense! I found a free trial of software to organize my documents and keep me almossst paperless…find it at xambox.com. It might be something worth looking into if you have a lot of papers lying around…and it’s quite a smart purchase (remember it’s free:)!

  4. I buy glasses online. They’re way cheaper and good quality once you find a good store.

    Mrs Money Reply:

John- That’s another great thing to buy online. It’s crazy how expensive glasses are at the optometrist.

Emily- I think it’s awesome that cloth diapers help the environment while you use them and then someone else can use them too!

I think the craziest thing I purchased online is the Command Strips for the hooks that you can stick onto the wall. I bought a bunch!

    Mrs Money Reply:

Shannon- Those things are really neat but expensive in the store. Great idea to buy them on the internet!

  7. I used to buy REALLY expensive blades for my husband, then I really got into couponing and going to CVS and Walgreen’s and playing their games I can usually get the Schick razors or the pro glide razors for free or just a few cents they usually have 2 blades and I figure that is better than I can do anywhere else. It just takes a little time to clip the coupons and look at the sights to see what is on sale!

i have purchased coupons online for some stuff that I really wanted to stock up on.

Journey to Our Home- That’s a great idea! I should look into doing the deals at CVS or Walgreens. I hadn’t thought about that.

  8. Ovulation Kits and Pregnancy tests are WAY cheaper online than at the drugstore or walmart.

I also bought mail order beneficial bugs for my garden.

Those are about the two weirdest things.

    Mrs Money Reply:

First Gen- That is totally true! I have bought pregnancy tests at the Dollar Store.

I think you win with the bugs for your garden!

  10. I bought toilet bowl cleaner and electric toothbrush heads at Amazon a couple of weeks ago. They just have the best deals and now I’m getting free shipping with Amazon Mom program.

Haha! We order some very strange things over the internet, too–mostly stuff where we just can’t fathom spending twice the money to buy it in-store. But I do think our UPS man would giggle at our purchases if he knew what they were. :-)
