I never understood why people ask “relatable” types. In some settings, sure you desire your characters to be relatable. But it’s not constantly a prerequisite. If all characters ever were people we could connect to (i.e. like to people we’ve met), then why the hell would we ever view TV in the first place? Why not just run out and speak to real people?

You are so right. To kids, a thing is a thing. *they* don't know how much it costs, they just know you are willing to get them whatever they ask for if you say yes to every little $1 thing they request. I constantly battle the same thing with my daughter. I have handled it by letting her pick something when we get in a store that she can hold while I shop and then she has to put it back before we leave.
