Saving Money to Buy a New Computer

I’m sure you all remember the post where I asked you for advice on choosing a new computer. You guys are the best, and I received some awesome advice that I will definitely follow when I decide to make the plunge and drop some serious dough on that machine. However, I’ve kind of solved part of the problems that I’d been having with my computer.
Here’s what was going on with my current Gateway desktop computer. When I’d log into certain websites (my website’s wordpress, twitter, some other random ones), some of the functions wouldn’t work properly. For example, in my wordpress admin I couldn’t change the date on the posts. On twitter, I couldn’t get direct messages or @ultmoneyblog replies. Needless to say, I was so frustrated.
Then one day, I was going into my CA Security Suite Anti Virus program to accept cookies on some site, and decided to click on some random tab. I noticed that there were websites listed there, websites that I knew were legit that needed cookies to function. That’s when I decided I would add ultimatemoneyblog.com and twitter.com to that list.
When I logged into wordpress and tried to change the date, guess what happened? The date could be changed. Guess what happened when I logged into twitter? I could get direct messages and replies. I about died. I was SO MAD.
Of course, now I feel like the biggest idiot there ever was. At the same time, I am CURSING CA Security Suite for being so darn overprotective! For so long I have been ready to go out and buy a new computer because I thought this one was a piece of crap and it was the darn anti virus causing all the problems. Ugh.
I am still saving up to buy a laptop, though. I’m thankful that I won’t have to shell out all that money yet, but I was excited about getting a new computer. All in due time.
Have you ever had something like this happen?

I saw your comment re: Suzie – agree completely… the use of debit cards is really increasing the value of stocks like MasterCard (MA).

I used to do tech support and had a knack at helping other techs fix problems such as yours. Don’t feel silly – even the best of my techs would overlook the simplest things.
Had one client who’s computer always locked up on her. It was a shared computer that other users used too but the problem only occur when she used the computer. 3 different techs tried everything to fix the problem. 1 tech tried changing settings – no go, then tried delete the user’s profile – no go; tech gave up. Tech 2 – also tried deleting/recreating user’s profile not just on the computer but also on the network – no go. Tech 3 – tried everything the other techs tried and also went as far as swapping out the hard drive & re-installing the operating system – no go. Finally I said I would take a look. Met with the user, told them I was just going to observe what she did while she used the computer. The desk phone rang, and the user answered it. As she was hanging up the phone, the cord struck the “Scroll Lock” key on the keyboard, locking up the program she was using. My solution – popped out/removed the “Scroll Lock” key. User never had the problem again.

Wow! That is so crazy. You must have felt great that you fixed her problem though. I felt like a goofus, but at the same time, the stupid anti virus seems a little overkill at times! lol
Of course if I got a virus I’d be mad too.
