Making my House a Home

I’ve decided that since most likely we’ll be in this house for awhile longer that I’m going to make the best of it. I’m going to do things myself to this house that will make it more my style and make me feel better about it. I can’t move across country today, so I’ll have to give it some time and see how we feel in about six months. Sometimes I lack patience, and everyone knows you need patience to survive life, so I’m going to learn some patience too.
One of the things that’s been bothering me about this house is the carpet. As I mentioned before, on Saturday I decided to rip up the carpet in our office. It was really old and worn. I am a little bit of a germophobe too, and I cleaned that carpet numerous times but it just wouldn’t make it. Up it came.
I really wanted to just refinish the hardwoods underneath, but they were in such bad shape that we couldn’t do it. We went to Home Depot, purchased some luaun, and I’m going to be putting that underneath the new laminate flooring. Truth be told, I’m not a big fan of laminate, but it fits our budget, and real hardwood I couldn’t install myself, not to mention the damage my two Labrador retrievers would do to it.
It’s baby steps, and I need to remind myself of that. Eventually this house will be just how I want it, and I can be pleased. I’ll post pictures of my new office once it’s done. Hopefully I’ll be able to purchase a new tv stand for in there too!

This might sound stupid, but how does laminate flooring decrease the value of your home? I am buying a home shortly and will have to replace flooring & was planning on doing laminate b/c I hear most other flooring animals can scratch it up.

Okay… I think I read the post wrong. Anyways… lol. I think just making your house more of a “home” to you, you’ll better enjoy your home. Plus, get some ideas out of design books and find frugal ways of designing your house the way you want. It’s a fun challenge!

Yeah I detest laminate, but many dog owners swear by the stuff. I think it depends on how well it is installed, I’ve seen plenty that looks just like vinyl flooring, yuck. Too bad the wood couldn’t be saved, ours are in good shape I think because they were under carpet for a long time. There are tack/nail marks all over it, but they just add character.

Tiffany- I would go ahead and do the laminate. I really really didn’t like laminate at first but the brand we got (Harmonics Laminate at Costco) looks great and is priced so well! We wanted to go with hardwood, but it would have been so expensive for materials plus we couldn’t install it ourselves. Not to mention the wear and tear of the dogs’ nails. Let me know if you have any questions!
Miss M- I really wish I could have refinished it but it was not worth it.
Plus, we already put laminate in the hallway and Mr. Money is picky about having all kinds of different flooring in the house. He wants it uniform. I’m okay with it now.
