OK, I'm a little late chiming in, but I was just looking up recipes for a blog post for tomorrow. This is the recipe that I use: http://diynatural.com/simple-effective-jabs-homemade-dishwasher-detergent-rinse-agent/ It has worked great!

@ Farmer's Daughter- I purchased Costco's dish detergent and have been using that. It claims it is eco-friendly. I agree with you!

I tried this recipe for a few months after hearing about it on another blog. However, my glasses became really clowdy, like they weren't being cleaned or there was some kind of residue on them. I used vinegar as a rinse aid, too.

I have since switched back to an eco-friendly detergent, and my dishes are clean again. I'd like to make my own but don't want to sacrifice quality.

Here's a good recipe for an oven cleaner, minus all the harsh chemicals you'll find in store bought cleaners.

Ingredients:
1 cup baking soda
1/3 cup table salt
Water

Directions:
Spray oven well with water.
Mix together the dry ingredients and then sprinkle over the water.
Next, Spray again with water.
Leave to sit overnight. Wipe out the next morning and scrub oven with hot soapy water.

Brian- That sounds like a legitimate idea! Thankfully, I've ripped up the carpet in my office and we'll be pulling up the carpet in my living room soon as well. Thanks for sharing your idea; I'm sure anyone that stumbles upon this post will be fairly warned now. :)

I'm not sure you should use vinegar as a carpet cleaner. Fabric softeners essentially work by breaking down fibers. Specifically, vinegar might leave your carpets soft and fluffy, but it will absolutely strip off any stain protection that came on the carpet (some level is standard on all carpet these days), and will ultimately allow the carpet to get much more saturated with dirt, where it can bind more closely to the fibers because it has frayed them. You pay heavily for softness - fabric softeners wear out clothes much more quickly than without. That's also why washers without agitators are better for your clothes.

You'll be replacing your carpet much sooner by doing this.

I don't bother with vinegar as a fabric softener. As I have to use a dryer, I use dryer balls instead, and they work really well. They soften the clothes by mechanical agitation - literally beating the clothes into softness! (I wonder if the same effect could be achieved by 2 tenis balls in the dryer?)... It is a little noisy but works well, and doesn't bother me too much as I have a separate laundry room.

I do use vinegar for cleaning carpets (1 cup/gallon of water), in a homemade antibacterial spray, to descale all sorts of things from the steamer to the coffee maker and also to clean out the washing machine and the dishwasher. I also use vinegar in the rinse-aid part of the dishwasher and use it as a glass-cleaner.

I make my own laundry detergent - I prefer a dry one - equal parts of grated soap, laundry soda and borax.

And I am so going to try the dishwasher detergent!
