wifeish- I agree! I hope that people start consuming less and there’s less consumerism. It seems like with the economic downturn that a lot of people have been evaluating what’s important. We just need to push it to the next level.

Early Retirement Extreme- Wow, great comment! I had no idea carbon lingers in the atmosphere for 1000 years. It makes me so sad that Americans are the biggest contributors to pollution. I wish people would wake up and realize how wasteful they are. Thanks for your comment!

I really hope that capitalism / consumerism propels the green movement. It is simply more cost efficient to use less of things, use recycled materials, cut down on electric costs, and repair rather than buy new items. Big companies like Wal-mart are even doing more to be green simply because it saves money. Do I think climate change is a hoax? No. Do I think we have all the information about what is going on on our planet? No. I do think it is our responsibility (climate change or no) to conserve and encourage recycling and reuse to save money and resources. Because these are things we should be doing, whether the Earth is experiencing climate change or not.

I tend to believe the majority of climate scientists on this issue but at the same time I’ve tried to make the very same point you make here. We need to take care of the environment regardless of whether or not climate change is occurring. It’s simply the right thing to do.

The problem is that the US media operates on the assumption that there must be two sides to every story and that these must be given equal weight regardless of whether one side is supported by 99% of the experts. (This is silly on the same level as making a creationism museum featuring a dinosaur with a saddle. I am not making this up.) As a consequence a lot of Americans think there are reasonable doubt about climate change. Fortunately, this is almost exclusively an American problem. Unfortunately, Americans are the biggest contributor to the problem. (Otherwise, the rest of the world would just ignore us.)

The worst thing that can happen is actually to a large degree that we come to believe that driving a prius or buying products with a green trademark on them is sufficient to reach a sustainable level. The problem is that we are very far from a sustainable level today. We are drawing down resources faster than they are being replaced and polluting faster than that it can be absorbed. For instance, anytime anyone burns carbon, it will linger in the atmosphere for the next 1000 years.

In the future, the externalities which have so far been free or pushed onto someone else (like outsourcing our industrial production and its sideeffects) will come back as costs. It all balances out. We get the goods. Future generations pay the price.

Zeke- The water problem makes me sick. It is so sad how polluted our water is! I am worried that the government is going to put all kinds of crazy laws into effect just for the reason to make more money off taxes and such instead of having the health of people in mind.
