We filed on March 27th and got our unexpected refund April 6th. :-)

BUT, we are not organized people usually. We made ourselves promise to do better in 2009...this is how we did it:

1. Used one kitchen drawer for all needed receipts, property tax bills, W2's, 1099's, stock stuff, etc.
2. Printed out all Paypall and other online donation receipts and threw in the same drawer.
3. Threw Goodwill receipts in that drawer.
4. Paid extra for carbon copy checks and make copies of all hobby job expense checks and any other checks that would be tax deductible...threw in drawer.
5. Printed out 2009 toll road invoices in January and highlighted all toll road charges that are tax deductible...threw in drawer
6. Got husband to print out his hobby job mileage and threw in drawer.

And the one that we will not be doing next year:

7. Take all stuff from drawer, drive to CPA, drop off stuff, give away an additional $475.

Next year, we'll be doing our taxes ourselves. She didn't find any extra deductions that we didn't know about (thanks to blogs I read), so that was a freaking waste...

re: property taxes paid. You should be able to find that info online, at your county auditor's website. Search by property owner or address. Just an FYI.

I just put them all in the mail this afternoon, fed, state, and local. I did them by hand, no software other than a blank Excel sheet. Took like 4 days of off-and-on skull-shrinking labor, maybe 10 hours total. Each time I do this I curse the abstruse tax code.

This is the first year in as long as I can remember that I didn't do them April 14th in a sweat-soaked mad dash. And it feels good to have them in the mail and the weekend "clear", even though we're paying out over $3,500 this time.

I'm embarrassed to say, I haven't filed mine yet either.

I did get a lot of work on it done yesterday though. Now I just have to dot my is and cross my ts... Then it's onto the state one, weeeee.

I'm using the free online version of taxact.com.

Next year I'm going with Turbo Tax though. Apparently, I can import my stock transactions (loss/gains) from my broker account somehow. For me, this would be awesome!!!

I just did a post on this same topic! I filed mine a while ago, but had to pay less than $100, which was nice to do so long ago. Luckily for me I'm still single and don't have a house or other things to get in the way of doing my taxes easily. Hopefully my boyfriend gets a refund, one of us deserves to!

We haven't filed ours yet either. April comes around and my husband's like, "Well, we better get our taxes done." He's got all the main info entered into the tax program. I just have to finish adding up my income and business expenses today. We file ours with Turbo Tax.

Oh, this makes me feel good! EVERY YEAR my husband and I are the clients who show up at our accountant's office, heads hanging in shame over our paperwork because we waited until the last minute to come in. We get the scolding, the warning that we might have to request a deferral - and then our accountant pulls it off (He's such the enabler) This year we got it done by the 4th (of April :)) - a miracle of sorts for us.

One of these days we're gonna put everything into Quicken or some other budgeting software and then just push a button to file our taxes (someone tell me this can happen?)
