How Often do you Check your Bank Account?

Working at the bank provides many benefits, and one of them is that it’s really easy to keep an eye on my bank accounts.  I can just pull up our checking accounts, credit card, and mortgage all with the click of a button.  We keep our savings account at ING so I have to log on to another site to be able to check our savings accounts.  I noticed that I check our bank accounts with our main bank a lot more than I do our savings accounts because it’s much more convenient.  After I checked our checking accounts for the sixth time today, I realized that maybe that was a little obsessive. :)

When I didn’t work at the bank, I checked our checking account about once a day.  I would check off the transactions that posted to the account and then check the balance.  It worked very well for me!  Now I check our checking accounts at least a few times a day.  I think I probably could cut that down to once a day!

With our savings accounts, I check them roughly once a week.  We have a few different accounts at ING with different purposes, so some of the accounts don’t change as much (emergency fund) as some of the others (car insurance fund).  I think that checking the savings accounts once a week is reasonable.

With our mortgage, I check that online about once a month to make sure that the payments have been posted correctly.  Of course, the mortgage doesn’t change as frequently as the other accounts so it’s nice to not have to keep close tabs on that account.

When you have more bank accounts it’s more to keep track of.  I think as long as you work out a system that works for you, that’s the most important part.

I check all of my accounts once per month when I am filling out my Net Worth spreadsheet (a la Trent a thesimpledollar). Any more than that for my investments and I would go crazy watching the market changes and such. For my check card account, I check it a little more frequently – but only if I’ve used the card (which is usually about once a week) to make sure I was properly charged. I don’t balance a check book (or even have one for that matter!) so just double checking that everything is OK is my way of making sure everything is “balanced”.

Catherine- That’s one thing I have been bad about tracking- net worth. I should work on that more. I don’t check my 401k a lot for the same reasons as you!

I like that you don’t use your cards too much. I should probably give that a try. It would be much easier to reconcile things!

  2. I check our accounts once every two-three days. Depending on how spendy we may have been, I’ll do it a daily check. We have three accounts (two checking, one saving), so it’s super simple to check things every few days. When I first used online banking, I never used my checkbook registry to track purchases. I started using one at the beginning of 2009 and I’m not sure why I never did!

Saving Her Life- I use the check book register too! It is something I am glad I use too! It makes it easy to double check the transactions for me.

I check all three of my checking accounts daily. I check my savings about 2 times a week. I do so online.

Becky- Are all of your checking accounts at the same bank? I have two checking accounts with the same bank, and that makes it easy to check them. :)

I get a daily e-mail for the checking. I check savings every other week when my husband’s paycheck is direct-deposited. Others I check once a month, when it’s time to balance the books.

Heather- That’s really cool! I wonder if I could get a daily email instead. That would simplify things!

Thanks to online banking, it takes me less than 20 seconds to surf to my bank’s site and check my accounts. I try to do it at least two or three times a week. Meanwhile, my husband keeps an eye on the balance day-to-day. That way, if he has to leave the house to buy something, he knows what we have left in our account.

Abigail- I like that your husband checks the account too. I don’t think mine has ever logged into online banking! ;)

I try to check my regular checking account on a daily basis. Sometimes 2 days might go by before getting online, but then I can also see my ER fund and a few other accounts as well. My long term savings account I only check about once a month since it is with CapOne. However, if I worked at a bank where my money was sitting, I’d probably be checking it much more often!

Little House- Do you have your emergency fund with the same bank as your checking account? Sometimes I think that may work better for us.

  7. About 3 times a week. I download activity into Quicken once a week, but I go online and check more often. I’ll only check my online savings account maybe once a month – but I check the balance in Quicken often.
