Frugal Christmas Eve Traditions

Can you believe it’s already Christmas Eve? I sure can’t! I love Christmas Eve. I think it is the most magical night of the year. I especially love when there’s a little snow on the ground, Christmas lights are sparkling, and people are snug in their houses drinking hot cocoa and waiting for Santa.

Here are some of my favorite frugal Christmas Eve traditions:

  • Attending Church for Christmas Eve service.  I know that many people attend churches on Christmas Eve even if they don’t attend year-round.  I can understand why; Christmas Eve service is the best!  Many churches light candles and turn out the lights while singing.  It’s so beautiful and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
  • Opening one present on Christmas eve (always pajamas!) and wearing them to bed that night.  I remember as a kid I always looked forward to my new jammies.  I couldn’t wait to see what they were!  I still have my moose pj pants from a few years ago, and they’re still one of my favorites!
  • Gathering with family, eating Christmas cookies and drinking hot cocoa while watching singing Christmas carols.
  • When I was a little girl, my dad would go out in the snow after we had gone to bed and he would make Santa’s footprints in the snow!  We always wondered which direction he would come from!
  • Watching Christmas movies on Christmas Eve.  Elf, Home Alone, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Cartoon, and a Christmas Story are all my favorites!

What are your favorite Christmas Eve traditions?

I have to agree. Christmas Eve is my favourite part of Christmas too! We get together with my parents and sister and celebrate with the same meal every year. Then, when we get home, I read The Polar Express to my 3 boys by the fireplace and the Christmas tree. I still choke up during the last page. My 2 older sons are 14 now, so last year one of them read the book for us all. This year, my youngest (almost 11) wants to read it. I can’t wait.

    Merry Christmas!

  2. I love your frugal Christmas Eve traditions! I don’t really have any, but those PJ commercials sure make getting new PJs look like a lot of fun! :-) Thanks for sharing, now I feel all warm and fuzzy inside, thinking of something we could do tonight as a family. Maybe watch a movie together or something.

We plant “magic seeds” outside. In the morning, candy canes grow!
