Decluttering Challenge: 365 in 2011

As you may already know, I am a little bit of a decluttering freak.  A minimalist lifestyle speaks to me, and although I don’t think I’ll ever be a “100 things minimalist”, I still value the basics.  With the start of a new year, I decided that I would start a challenge.  Declutter 365 items from my house this year.  I don’t think this is a stretch, but it will challenge me to keep up with the amount of Stuff that resides in my house.

While you declutter, look for items that you can sell either on eBay or Craigslist.  That way you are not only decluttering your home but you are also making a few bucks at the same time!

Are you up for the challenge? I’d love for you to join in.

Here are my ideas:

365 Decluttering Challenge

-Have a weekly check in for those participating.  I think it would be awesome if participants would post photos on their blogs of the items they’ve decluttered.  Maybe even before/after photos of the rooms would be a good idea!  I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for before and after photos.  I think they are so inspiring!

-If you’re hard core and you have a lot of Stuff, you may want to consider upping your goal to 2011.  Personally I didn’t want to undertake this goal because we’d probably have nothing left if I did!  If you can stand to purge more items, go for it!

-Keep an eye on what goes into the home.  Of course, it’s easier to live with less if you’re not bringing more items in! Keep it simple.

These are fairly simple guidelines.  I think it’s a fairly easy concept- simplify your life and home by decluttering 365 items in one year.  If you’re up for the challenge, let me know below in the comments, and I’ll add you to the group!

Happy decluttering!

I love this idea! I’ve been working hard to declutter our home and this is motivating. I’m working on creating a new site, having trouble coming up with a name that isn’t taken already! But once it’s up I’d love to participate. I’m also a sucker for before/after pictures.

AJ- Be sure to let me know once it’s up! I’m thinking we can do a weekly check in! 🙂

If it goes in trash does that count as decluttered as well? I will take this challenge.

I also like the idea of less. Just the other day I decluttered (but it was still 2010) 7 bags of stuff from my boys rooms.

We have a small 900 square foot house so we have to have less stuff, but it gets hard with my 13 and 7 year old boys who I homeschool.

They like stuff. Lots of it. lol. And they still have less than most of their friends.

just gave away on 3 things, and threw away a no longer needed baby bathtub (it was moldy so no good freecycleing it.) 4 things already. yeah!

Becky- Awesome! I definitely think that things you have to trash count. I’m looking forward to everyone’s progress! I’m thinking once a week we can have a check in and maybe show pictures and link up.

I try not to let things build up. Every week, I try to do something to declutter. I take a small step with the things in the garage. This year, I went paperless which should help.

krantcents- I agree! I like to do something each week to help tackle the clutter. It’s less overwhelming that way!

Haha… someone in my life was just bugging me about that today… so I guess you could say I’m up for the challenge. I suspect I’ll need lots of encouragement along the way… and while I won’t be posting the pictures on my site, I’d be happy to send some your way if you’d like.

    Mrs Money Reply:

Doctor Stock- Yay! That’s great. I would love pictures. I am thinking that we can do a picture each week, but I’d love to feature yours if you want to send them to me! You can send them any time to Thanks!!

This is just what I need! I’m a decluttering, organizing manic, but I also have an all or nothing problem. I love the idea of having a set number, doing a little day by day. I think I’m going to follow along and use this to inspire the Summer Kitchen decongest and renovation. Great idea, Mrs. Money!

Not sure I’ll take many pics, but I’m definitely in purging mode!

I learned recently that amazon will give you amazon credit for certain books, movies, and video games. Some of them I’m sure you can get more for otherwise, but they pay for shipping. As soon as I’m done with the whole transaction, I’m going to blog about it. Just sending them some books tomorrow…

I’m late to the party, but I’m in. I’m already boxing up a lot of items to take to a new consignment store in a nearby town. I’ll be posting pictures and my current count on decluttered items.

I’m very late in the game, but have decided to start! I’ll do what I can this year, and starting in 2012 the official 365 (or should it be 366?) count will start. I’m hoping to move in with my boyfriend next year, so 2011/2012 might be possible!
    1. pencil case of old/dried out pens and highlighters.
    11. 10 articles of clothing from my closet I haven’t worn in years, added to the bag I started at the beginning of the year. To be taken to a shelter tomorrow.
    12. Curling iron I have never used
    13. parts from my aquarium I no longer need
    14. box of old receipts that won’t do anything at tax time
    18. 4 bottles old nail polish
    19. old recipe box that I never used because I found a better one.
    20. empty container for a product I can no longer buy.
