Counting My Blessings

Posted by Mrs Money | February 3rd, 2009

bless.jpgI just spent 4 days without power due to an ice storm hitting the region. While it’s not as long as others are experiencing, it was long enough for me. We did end up spending a little money we hadn’t planned on; mainly for firewood and groceries that didn’t need to be refrigerated. I was so thankful we have our wood burning stove, although we did have to purchase fire starting logs, which was $26 for six. We bought three boxes, which cost $78. Even though we spent that money, I couldn’t help but be glad we had the resources to do so!

While I was sitting in my 57 degree dark house, I stared to feel sad but couldn’t actually fully feel that way. Even though it was cold, dark, and boring, at least I had a house to be cold and bored in. There are a lot of people out there that can’t afford their homes. At least I have a job that provides me with money to pay my mortgage and high winter heating bill. Even though having debt is very stressful, at least we can pay those bills on time and a pay off a little extra each month.

Having a student loan, car loan, mortgage, or any kind of debt is most likely going to be a necessity for many people. Instead of being upset about having debt, I’m going to try my hardest to focus on being thankful that I have something to show for each of those. If we didn’t have student loan debt, we wouldn’t be as educated and wouldn’t have as good paying jobs (maybe). If we didn’t have a car loan, we wouldn’t have a nice used car we don’t have to worry about breaking down. If we didn’t have a mortgage, or a high electricity bill, we wouldn’t have a beautiful roof over our heads that we love.

It’s all about how you look at things sometimes. Sure, you could be better off by having more money in savings, less debt, or winning the lottery. The grass is always greener on the other side. The truth is: life wouldn’t be such a fun and exciting ride if it weren’t for detours! I’m going to count my blessings!

I was wondering what happened to you, I’m glad you’re OK! You have a great attitude, which I love. So many people only want to focus on the negative, you found reasons to be thankful for what you have instead of dwelling on what was missing. Thank goodness for the wood burning stove, I imagine you would have had to go to shelter or someplace with power if you didn’t. Stay warm, you can always move to LA where we’ve been basking in summer temps for weeks.

Stinkin winter! I’m glad you’re ok. I’m not exactly sure where we’d go if the power went out for that long. With mah behbeh, I don’t think we could stick around in a cold apartment.

Btw, did you get your box of Little Debbie yet? I hope it’s there soon, if not already!

Miss M- Tell me about it! LA sounds great! I don’t know what we would have done without that woodburning stove. Thanks for the compliment about my attitude. Sometimes I feel I’m too negative but I’m glad I don’t come across that way!

Kacie- I got them yesterday!!! Thanks again!

I don’t know what we would have done if we had kids either. We’d have to go to a shelter or something. Crazy!
