That's a great idea! My brother is actually really good with computers. I should see if he can build one for me. Thanks so much for the tip!

If you want to save money on a computer there is one way to go, build it. There are plenty of resources out there that will guide you through the process. I've done it many times and order all the parts from Newegg. You can build a computer that matches your needs perfectly, for a cheaper price. It might seem intimidating but if you have a friend good with computers offer him $50 to do it for you.

One thing to keep in mind is that you have to buy the software. As an IT student I got windows for free so that saved a lot of cost for me. I use Open Office to save a bit more money as well.

[...] One of the latest videos he forwarded to me carried the following message: buy whatever you want to now while the dollar is still worth something, because in a few months it’s going to take a lot more dollars to buy whatever object you’re interested in. It does make sense; if the dollar’s value declines horribly in a few months, then we’ll probably all be kicking ourselves that we didn’t buy that flat screen tv or that new laptop.
Looks like we're in the same boat. I have a PC notebook and I am switching to Mac, mostly because it is actually more economical. I am a software/hardware engineering student and I generally need to stay up do date with the latest operating systems. So I bought this Sony about 3 years ago when I was starting college. Then Vista came out and Sony only offered limited support. Then Windows 7 came out and Sony offered no support of the new OS. My friend with the 3 year old MacBook is running Snow Leopard just fine. So, while Apple is the more expensive choice initially, you probably won't have to buy a new computer every 2 years in order to have the latest (most secure/functional) software.

I just thought I'd let you know that the Walmart Black Friday ad got posted today. So far it has the best deals of all the ads posted. There are 4 laptops listed with the following prices 198, 298, 398, and 498.

They're listed on the third page.

Hey! So exciting to get a new computer! Always fun in my book, lol. So, since you do photos---I am going to have to say "GO MAC!" Although I don't have one, I'd really really really love one. However, if you are just going to do minor photo stuff a PC would serve a good purpose as well.

Those sites mentioned before, Newegg.com included are all good sites. Also, Best Buy will price match other stores. (Not sure if they do web matching though...)

If you want a good screen, make sure you get something with 720i/720p or higher, like 1080i or 1080p. The "p" stands for progressive and can handle motion better than the "i" (interlaced). But if you are just looking at laptop screens the difference between the i or the p will really not be a point to ponder.

Anyway--hope this helps!!!

My monitor is sooo old (I got it from a garage sale for $10 a few years ago!) but works. I'm hoping to get a decent laptop with a nice screen. I'm excited!
