$5 Footlong Sub Sandwiches at Subway: Good Deal?
By Mrs Money on May 14, 2008 – 1:11 am -
Today I went to Subway for lunch with a friend. We both are frugal, so we decided we would split a $5 footlong sub. When we got there, we noticed a new sign: $5 footlong for certain sandwiches. What a rip off! Just a few weeks ago we had ordered an Italian BMT and got it for $5, but today it wasn’t on the list, so we would have had to pay full price. We opted for the Spicy Italian Sub instead because it was on the $5 list. We also ordered chips and a drink (I had water) and that was $2 extra. When they told me my total was $9 and some change, I was so confused. I questioned it and somehow he rang it up incorrectly. Needless to say, my lunch at Subway was not all that enjoyable. I felt cheated that they were doing limited subs for $5. I guess the commercials are their way of roping you in and then of course you get your favorite sub. At least I paid attention and realized the money mistake. They did charge me the correct amount after I questioned it.
Here is the list of $5 footlong subs at my local Subway:
- Meatball Marinara
- Veggie Delight
- Spicy Italian
- Black Forest Ham
- Oven Roasted Chicken Breast
- Tuna

Each location has it’s own rules. One of my local subways is still doing the $5 deal for ANY sub, another of the local subways isn’t participating at all.

Catherine- Thanks for letting me know! There is another Subway in the town I work in. I’ll have to check it out. It’s crazy how things can be so different for the same stores!

As a follow up, I just saw a commercial for Subway saying that they are going to make the $5 footlong promotion on their menu permanently. This means that it will be across the board for about 10 sandwiches. They didn’t really say if some places will still be allowing other sandwiches for $5. I can’t find a list of the 10 subs they mentioned on the commercial, but I know Spicy Italian and Meatball were 2 of them.

Catherine- Thanks for letting me know! I’ll still continue to eat there when I decide to go out for lunch, but you know I’ll be buying off the $5 menu!

I don’t know if it’s only in Canada, but at Quiznos, all footlong subs are 5$ after 5pm. This means that, sometimes, it’s cheaper to get a footlong than a 9 inch of the same sub.

the funny thing about those 5$ deals is that some of those subs (veggie and tuna for sure) are already 4.99…

Nicole- I guess it’s all about marketing! I try to stay away from fast food, but sometimes it’s inevitable. At least there are some deals out there for semi healthy food.

Holy Cow! It is a rip off. I used to buy three foot long clubs and the bill was under $20.00. Not any more. If they shave the meat any thiner, they should call it foot long bread.

Stephen- Your comment about “foot long bread” made me laugh. I always get the veggie sub, so I’m not sure about the meat. It’s crazy you used to be able to get 3 footlongs for $20!

I live in Canada and after seeing it advertised on stations we get from the US, I went to Subway to try and get it and it turns out that the offer isn’t valid here. LAME!

I just visited a store in Miami, here is the store number, address and clerk #; 33971, 8686 NW 13th Terrace, Miami Fl. 33122, Clerk #11.
This is where you do not want to go, not only did the owner decide to take the Tuna sandwich off of the $5 menu, they do not tell you until you reach the register where it is too late. By reading these comments, I have noticed a bothersome trend and did write to Subways Corp. on their website where my email will be forwarded to the owner. We should not tolerate this cheap attempt to rippoff the public, if a sandwich has been on this menu since the $5 inception then it is expected to be there unless told in ADVANCE of the change. I will no longer visit this location where I frequented, Quiznos now has a $4 sandwich that is amazing, really it is, no hype. First they took away the Subway Club Card and now this crap, no way!
